Updates For the Day

I will be posting my video on Qeiyafa tomorrow. As for today, George Grena proposes dozens of illegible (in the ’30s) Lachish letters may lie in Lachish’s excavation dump.

  1. Clarifications:

    1) HUNDREDS, not “dozens”!

    2) LEGIBLE using modern instruments, not necessarily “illegible” (except to the naked eye)!

In any case, my goal with this article was to inform as many people as possible that just because you can’t necessarily see an inscription on a burnt potsherd, doesn’t mean that nobody will ever be able to read one on it. Aside from the possible trace elements remaining from the ink (even after being subjected to a conflagration) including iron, microscopic/molecular crater “fingerprints” may still remain from the ink as it burned. I basically want people to think of ways the inscriptions could be recovered, then encourage the British Museum & IAA to search for them, or at least make future excavators of Lachish aware of the possibility that “the half was not told” yet from this archive!
