Without breaking out my atlas, I suspect the contradiction in the territory loss figures has a simple, harmless explanation: do you count unpopulated (or sparsely populated) desert as “controlled territory” or not, and if so, how do you delineate the boundaries of control? It seems trivial to change the total territory under control by a factor of two or more depending on how you count, and hence the relative magnitude of a territorial gain or loss is entirely determined by this choice of accounting.

    1. I have an even simpler explanation: I suspect Kerry is counting only gross losses; the DOD is counting net losses.

      Still counts as a contradiction, though.
