  1. 2: I’m not excited about coups in general, but when we get to that area of the world there aren’t a lot of good guys to cheer. Certainly Erdogan is a dickweasel that’s pushed Turkey toward fundamentalism, but he was an elected dickweasel.

    I’m hearing a conspiracy theory along the lines that Erdogan orchestrated the ‘coup’ in order to solidify his own power and purge the military of possible dissidents. He IS shaking up the judiciary system at the same time, which is either a necessary response or a power grab depending on how you view the news. Otherwise, I usually expect better planning from militaries. If it was actually a coup, why was it so limp-wristed? They were just expecting more popular support that they didn’t receive? Was the army on a deadline, act now or never? Is Turkey just that resistant to military takeover (I do not believe that)?
